I'm the founder and CEO of Water Rocks Publishing — and before I was a publisher, I was an author with a really bad first-publishing story. My debut book got pushed back release after release, my publisher barely communicated with me, and I paid royalties out for two years while going back to my audience over and over to explain why the book still wasn't out. I never wanted another author to feel that.
So I launched Water Rocks to build the opposite: an agency where authors keep 100% of their rights, royalties, and files, get coached through every step, and leave with the confidence and the tools to actually succeed — not just publish and pray. Since then, I've gone on to publish 13 of my own picture books, chapter books, and a comic book as D.M. Whitaker — plus another 20+ journals, coloring books, and activity books — built a 5-figure children's book business, and helped coaches, educators, executives, and speakers turn their manuscripts into books that hold their own on any shelf. My work has been featured in Omaha Magazine, chosen for Delta Sigma Theta's national convention, sold in grocery stores, and toured regionally.
I'm also a former reading teacher, a homeschool community leader for Black and brown families in my city, and I teach branding and marketing workshops for authors and businesses at Metro Community College. All of it comes back to the same thing: I genuinely love helping people build something that outlasts them — authority, legacy, and real financial security through their words. Nothing means more to me than an author coming back for their next book.
